Despite Being Healthy, Why This South Asia Fruit Remains Underappreciated

People are gradually realising the importance of having healthy foods and drinks over ones that are detrimental to health. Now, we have youngsters who go for a bottle of gooseberry or a bottle of gourd juices instead of carbonated drinks. Despite recognising the health benefits of plants and fruits, some fruits like Phalsa remain underappreciated and low in popularity despite their high nutritional value. Phalsa is native to Southeast Asian countries such as India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh.

In appearance, this fruit resembles a plum in both shape and colour. Phalsa is sold in markets covered with a cloth because it cannot tolerate sunlight. Its shelf life is very short, lasting only one to two days before it spoils. Its greatest feature is that it is a treasure trove of nutrients, providing an immediate boost of strength upon consumption. This fruit is refreshing and packed with numerous nutrients. In terms of benefits, Phalsa surpasses many other well-known fruits.

Firoz Khan, who sells Phalsa wrapped in cloth from a cart in Karauli, Rajasthan, says that Phalsa is available in the market for only 20 to 25 days, specifically during the summer month of May. He highlights that Phalsa is highly beneficial for the body and exceptionally refreshing, claiming it is cooler than any other fruit.

Currently, Phalsa is being transported to Karauli from Agra and is priced higher than apples and pomegranates. Its quick spoilage within a day or two contributes to its high cost, making it one of the more expensive fruits. In Karauli, Phalsa is being sold for Rs 240 per kilogram, surpassing apples and pomegranates in terms of price.

Ayurvedic physician Dr Umesh Sharma, highlighting the medicinal properties of Phalsa, tells Local18 that Phalsa is not only cooling but also rich in numerous medicinal benefits. It is abundant in nutrients, especially vitamin C. Additionally, it contains high levels of magnesium, potassium, carbohydrates, and iron. Phalsa is particularly beneficial for diabetic patients as it helps control blood sugar levels. It also has a high water content.
