Jim Ratcliffe's Five Commandments: Manchester United Owner Lays Down New Rules for Erik Ten Hag

Amidst a horror show of a season, the only breath of hope that Manchester United earned was clinching the FA Cup in a dramatic 2-1 win over Manchester City this past Sunday.

Whilst fans alike would like to look at it as a sign of good things to come, there is a lot more work left to be done if the Red Devils aim to work on the up and up as time passes. And new owner Jim Ratcliffe has been aware of the same.

As a manner of setting standards and a vision for the future, it has been reported by The Sun that Ratcliffe, following United’s FA Cup triumph against Manchester City, set out five new rules that any Manchester United manager, including especially Erik ten Hag currently, must follow if they want to work at the club.

Age limit of 25 for new signings

Ratcliffe understands that building for the future incorporates in nurturing talent and developing them into stalwarts for the future. Hence, the ruling has been reportedly made in order to ensure the same.

No Galácticos

United’s failed history of signing big names in the hopes of instantaneous success has only resulted in utter failure so far, since the departure of the great Sir Alex Ferguson. When there exists no identity for the team as a whole, the individuals that make up the squad can only do so much to find periodical success.

Must follow a style of play set out by new technical director Jason Wilcox

Calling back to the lack of identity, one of the major issues that the Red Devils have faced in the past decade since Ferguson’s deaprture has been the lack of methodical style of play.

Manager to be asked what position he wants to sign, not what player

In another promising step ahead, it seems as if Ratcliffe understands that there exists a dire need to flesh out a coherent squad, devoid of deficiencies in any department. The over-reliance on starpower to help United and pray for success is not a blueprint for growth in the near future.

INEOS to send a list of three signings per position for the manager to choose from

A controversial move of sorts, but Ratcliffe is seemingly of the belief that managers can’t be allowed to run free with the players they require. Whilst under certain circumstances, banking on the experience of a manager and his instinct for talent allows the club to evolve, Ten Hag currently has drawn nothing but blanks for the most part with his signings so far for United — the biggest failure of all being that of the winger Antony from ten Hag’s former club Ajax who has put up an abysmal season for the Red Devils on and off the field.
