Google Doodle today on May 4, 2024 celebrates Hamida Banu, who is widely recognised as India’s first professional woman wrestler. This tribute, illustrated by Bengaluru-based artist Divya Negi, showcased Banu amidst the flora and fauna of her homeland.
A CHAMPION RISES
Born in the early 1900s near Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, into a wrestling family, Banu’s passion for the sport blossomed early. Throughout the 1940s and 1950s, she dominated the ring, amassing over 300 victories.
Notably, defying the strong social norms that discouraged women’s participation in athletics at the time, Banu boldly challenged male wrestlers. Her confidence was such that she even offered her hand in marriage to any man who could defeat her.
A LEGENDARY BOUT AND INTERNATIONAL RECOGNITION
- May 4, 1954, marked a pivotal moment in Banu’s career. In a widely reported match, she achieved international acclaim by defeating the renowned wrestler Baba Pahalwan in a mere 1 minute and 34 seconds.
- This stunning victory led to Pahalwan’s retirement from professional wrestling.
- Banu’s success extended beyond India. She secured another impressive win against Russian wrestler Vera Chistilin, taking less than two minutes to overpower her opponent.
THE “AMAZON OF ALIGARH”
Newspapers across the nation couldn’t get enough of Banu. They chronicled her victories, her rigorous training regimen, and even her unique diet. Affectionately nicknamed the “Amazon of Aligarh,” Banu became a household name in India.
A LEGACY OF INSPIRATION
More than just a wrestling champion, Hamida Banu was a true pioneer. Her fearlessness and dedication to her passion shattered societal barriers and paved the way for future generations of female athletes in India. Her story continues to inspire women to chase their dreams and defy expectations.
