Leica has a rich history of creating some of the most iconic cameras and lenses in the world. Unfortunately, these cameras are too expensive for many photography enthusiasts to afford, preventing them from experiencing the uniqueness of shooting through a Leica lens. However, the company is now aiming to make that experience more accessible with the launch of its latest app, Leica Lux.

This new camera app is specifically designed for iPhone users and comes with 11 colour profiles known as ‘Leica Looks.’ The free version offers five Looks, while unlocking all the colour profiles and other professional features will cost $6.99 (Rs 580 approx) per month.

While Apple's camera is already impressive compared to other smartphones, this new camera app promises to elevate anyone's photography skills even further. According to reports, the app allows users to virtually switch between various classic Leica M lenses and use the company's colour science instead of Apple's to get unique results. It also includes an Aperture mode that is similar to expensive lenses like the Noctilux-M 50mm f/1.2, Summilux-M 28mm f/1.4 and Summilux-M 35mm f/1.4.

Leica's proprietary image processing engine, grounded in machine learning and computer-aided photography, these lens simulations reproduce the unmistakable look for which these lenses are renowned. This means that iPhones now have the opportunity to emulate photos with the unique aesthetic of the legendary Leica M lenses.

Interestingly, Leica Lux app can also be turned as a photo library, which lets users organize all their photos in one place and displaying EXIF information with a simple swipe. This includes details such as which virtual lens and look were used, as well as the location where the photo was taken.

As per the details of the app on the App store, “Effortlessly capable and intuitive in Auto Mode, Leica LUX also empowers photographers with unmatched manual control for limitless creativity. With controls such as: Exposure Compensation, Shutter Speed, ISO, White Balance, Manual Focus, Various Focusing Modes, RAW/ProRAW and more.”

In the past, Leica has collaborated with major smartphone makers like Xiaomi, as well as creating its own devices like, Leitz Phone, which are exclusively sold in Japan. Now, with Leica LUX, the company wants to strengthen their position in mobile photography. Leica, along with engineers from Fjorden, has worked hard to recreate some of its iconic lenses for LUX.
