A woman who has experienced three layoffs claims to have “cracked the code” to job applications. South Carolina-resident Giovanna Ventola said she is well-acquainted with the arduous task of job hunting, as she had faced three layoffs in three years. She now claims that she has discovered a life-changing technique with respect to job hunting.
Taking to social media video sharing platform TikTok, Giovanna shared her trick where she said that people should apply for jobs on Monday and then check again on Friday at ad repostings. Her video has amassed over a million views.
“I’ve been laid off three times in the past three years. I worked in the commercial real estate industry and it has just completely changed since COVID. This last time has been the hardest. The job market is drastically different than it even was a year ago,” Giovanna was quoted as saying by Newsweek.
“It’s taken a huge toll on my mental health and this time I really wanted to find the power in my search and take control of the way I was handling my professional future. It’s really hard to grow when you keep getting cut down,” she further added.
Ventola said that she realised after some time that she did not “need a job to grow”. “I can find a way to use this time to develop skills for myself. Hopefully that benefits a future employer someday or I learn enough to become that future employer,” she told the US-based magazine.
The Charleston-resident recounted how she first laid off in November 2020, during the Covid-19 pandemic. Then, she also recounted how she was jobless the second time when the firm she was working for filed for bankruptcy.
The third layoff came as another shock when she, along with other employees who had been with the company for only 90 days, lost their jobs just before the holiday season.
Ventolla then founded the Rhize professional Slack network in March 2024 to share tips and tricks for job seekers.
In a recent discussion, a former HR executive shared advice on structuring the week for those unemployed with ample time. She recommended a weekly routine: posting a job advertisement on Monday, reviewing submissions by Tuesday morning, and initiating applicant screenings that same day. Personal resume checks were conducted by midweek, with qualified candidates contacted for interviews scheduled the following week. If applications were lacking, the job ad would be reposted on Friday.
The recruiter structures her week according to this formula: aggressive job applications from Monday to Tuesday morning, avoiding any incoming applications on Wednesday and Thursday, and reviewing reposted job listings on Friday.
“I have not heard such tangible advice in the three layoffs, in the three years that I’ve been going through this where it’s like yeah, this is how you should structure your day. We just cracked some code like scheduling and managing our own calendar and I think when you can manage your own calendar and your time and you feel like you’re doing real work and you’re productive your mental health just goes up,” Ventola said.
