The Birmingham Airport authorities on Tuesday suspended all flights and operations following a security-related incident on board an Aer Lingus plane.

This comes after the Irish airline’s aircraft left the airport this afternoon but had to return due to a security issue. The airport has advised passengers with scheduled flights to still turn up.

After the incident, social media footage of the scene, which was being widely circulated, showed multiple emergency vehicles on the runway, and several flights have been delayed as a result of the incident.

Earlier, it was reported that a flight with the registration number EI3647 was scheduled to depart at 3:10 pm but was delayed for 40 minutes. However, just an hour after takeoff, the flight returned to the airport, and all passengers and staff were escorted out of the aircraft.

Since then several flights arriving at the airport on Tuesday evening were delayed, with the arrivals board showing delays from around 4.20 pm.

“The aircraft landed safely and all passengers and crew have disembarked. All customers due to travel should make their way to the airport and check in as normal,” Guardian quoted the spokesperson as saying.

In addition, West Midlands Railway has announced that train services between Birmingham New Street and Coventry have also been suspended. Emergency services are currently at the scene, and all train services are currently at a standstill until further notice, Independent reported.
