Bangladesh home minister Asaduzzaman Khan on Wednesday said that veteran Bangladeshi MP Anwarul Azim Anar who went missing in India was found murdered in West Bengal and three people have been arrested in connection with the case.
“So far, we have come to know that all the killers involved are Bangladeshis. It was a planned murder. We will soon inform you about the motive. Jhenaidah is a bordering area known for its high crime rate. Azim was the local lawmaker there. The incident took place after he went to India for treatment. According to what we currently know, he was killed there,” Asaduzzaman Khan was quoted as saying by the Daily Star.
According to news reports, Anwarul Azim Anar went missing on May 13, just a day after traveling to India for medical treatment.
Body Found in Kolkata’s New Town
Anar’s body was discovered in an abandoned house in Kolkata’s New Town in the early hours of Wednesday, as confirmed by a deputy police commissioner in the city. His relatives had filed a report on his disappearance at the Baranagar police station in North Kolkata on May 18.
On May 12, Anar had visited the residence of an individual named Gopal Biswas in Kolkata. The following day, he left Biswas’s residence to see a doctor, informing his family that he would return to Bangladesh in the evening. However, he remained unreachable since then, as reported by Al Jazeera.
Addressing the media, West Bengal CID IG Akhilesh Kumar Chaturvedi stated, “Bangladeshi MP Anwarul Azim Anar was on his personal visit here about which we had no intimation. On May 18, we got information that his associate Gopal Biswa had reported him missing since May 13. SIT was setup to trace him. As investigation was going on, we got intimation from MEA to look into the inquiry of West Bengal government on May 20. On May 22, we received input of his murder. Local police tracked his location and the case was transferred to CID.”

A report by Anandabazar Patrika said that the MP was living at a friend’s house in Kolkata’s Baranagar but left their residence after two days.
‘Killers Involved Are Bangladeshis’
“We have come to know that all the killers involved are Bangladeshis. It was a planned murder,” Asaduzzaman Khan said. The Bangladesh minister said that the body has not yet been found.
The Anandabazar Patrika report said that Kolkata Police have installed barricades outside a flat in Kolkata’s Newtown area. Citing people familiar with the developments, it said that the slain MP may have been living in that flat and bloodstains were found in the flat premises.
A forensics team also surveyed the flat, the report said.

Anwarul Azim Anar was a three-time MP and president of Kaliganj upazila unit Awami League.
