Taipei’s defence ministry said Thursday night it had detected 49 Chinese aircraft since Beijing launched two-day military drills after self-ruled Taiwan’s new leader vowed to defend the island’s democracy.
“Since 7:20 am (2320 GMT Wednesday) today, (the ministry) had detected 49 Chinese aircraft… of which 35 crossed the median line,” it said, referring to a line that bisects the waterway separating Taiwan from China. It added that the aircraft cooperated with “warships in the ‘Joint Sword-2024A’ military exercises”.
