Hollywood icon Robert De Niro on Tuesday had a face-off with the supporters of Donald Trump in New York when he called the former US President a “clown” and a “dictator” outside the courtroom where the latter’s hush money trial was underway.

Flanked by retired Capitol Police officers Harry Dunn and Michael Fanone, who were special guests of Joe Biden’s campaign, De Niro didn’t hold back in his criticism of the former president despite the crowd’s objections and branded him as a “clown” with ambitions to “destroy the world.”

“When Trump ran in 2016, it was like a joke. The only way to preserve our freedoms and hold on to our humanity is to vote for Joe Biden for president,” the legendary actor was quoted as saying by AFP.

“If he gets in. I can tell you right now, he will never leave,” De Niro said. “Is that the country we want to live in? Do we want him running this country and saying ‘I’m not leaving? I’m dictator for life?” he added.

De Niro On Jan 6 Capitol Riots

The ‘Goodfellas’ actor accused Trump of directing “an angry mob” to storm the US Capitol after his 2020 election defeat to Biden, adding that the Republican “ran and hid in the White House” during the violence.

Joined by retired officers Harry Dunn and Michael Fanone, who were wounded in the January 6, 2021 insurrection, De Niro launched to halt the certification by Congress of Biden’s victory.

Dunn is one of three officers who defended the Capitol who will campaign for Biden in key battleground states ahead of the president’s first election debate against Trump, slated for June 27.

Trump Supporters Hit Back At De Niro

De Niro’s remarks were criticised harshly by Trump supporters leading to an embarrassing face-off between the actor and the crowd.

Amidst a chorus of “F*** Joe Biden” chants from Trump supporters, De Niro continued his retort describing the former Republican President as a “grubby real estate hustler masquerading as a big shot” and a “two-bit playboy who lied his way into the tabloids.”

Despite facing backlash from the crowd, De Niro didn’t stop or waver in his condemnation of Trump.

In response, Trump’s spokesperson Jason Miller dismissed De Niro as a “washed-up actor,” a sentiment echoed by an irate Trump supporter who labelled De Niro as “washed up.”
