Tamil Nadu electric car registrations to resume today

Earlier, despite no official circular issued by the state transport department, oral instructions were given to all RTOs by senior officials to not register e-cars, particularly high-end models.
Amid intense govt campaigns to promote electric vehicles in the state, registration of new electric cars came to an abrupt halt at Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) across Tamil Nadu this week. Late on Wednesday evening, however, following criticism from various quarters, all RTOs were instructed to resume e-car registrations from Thursday morning and clear the backlogs as soon as possible.

Earlier, despite no official circular issued by the state transport department, oral instructions were given to all RTOs by senior officials to not register e-cars, particularly high-end models. And, since Monday, registration of more than 3,000 e-cars was put on hold, while electric two-wheelers and other conventional petrol and diesel vehicles were registered without issues.

Industries minister T R B Rajaa, through his official X account, attributed the halt to a technical issue in the online registration portal (Union road transport ministry-run Parivahan). However, sources in the state transport department indicated that the govt was considering changes to the tax waiver for e-cars, particularly those priced between INR 60 lakh and INR 80 lakh. Last year, the Tamil Nadu government extended a 100% road tax exemption for all electric vehicles until 2025.

The technical glitch mentioned by Rajaa had affected other motor vehicle documentation work at RTOs, including the renewal of fitness certificates issued to commercial vehicles such as autos, taxis, and trucks.

S Balasubramanian, state president of CITU's autorickshaw wing, stated that this is the third time this month that such disruptions have been experienced at RTOs in Chennai, including those at Kolathur, Anna Nagar, and KK Nagar. No explanation was given and auto drivers were made to wait the entire day, affecting their daily income, he said.
