“EVs are becoming popular in India and the proposed system will assist in making EVs cheaper, more powerful, and safer, giving buyers a good return on investment, said one expert from the field.
A team from Punjab Engineering College has won a cash prize worth INR 30,000 in the grand finale of Bajaj’s OHM challenge for designing a special traction system. Over 1,200 teams from 29 engineering campuses participated in the meet, including from IITs, NITs and IISc Bangalore.

The team of final year electrical engineering students, Hriday Agrawal, Mohit Tuteja, and Umesh Sikka, presented a devised traction system design within aim to make EVs cheaper and more accessible. The system incorporates an inverter to power a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) with a specified input voltage.

The design addressed critical challenges, including the restricted bending radius of connecting cables resulting from high power transmission, the development of an appropriate control strategy for the inverter, and the operation of the system under conditions of low input voltage.

“Electric vehicles are becoming popular in India and the proposed system will assist in making EVs cheaper, more powerful, and safer, giving buyers a good return on investment, said one expert from the field.
