“To provide seamless and barrier-free tolling experience to National Highway users and enhance efficiency and transparency of toll operations, Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL), a company promoted by NHAI has invited Global Expression of Interest (EOI) from innovative and qualified companies to develop and implement GNSS-based electronic toll collection system in India,” the statement said.
Initially, NHAI plans to introduce the GNSS-based electronic toll collection (ETC) system as a hybrid model within the existing FASTag ecosystem. This means both RFID-based ETC and GNSS-based ETC will operate concurrently.
The statement further mentions that dedicated GNSS lanes will be available at toll plazas, allowing vehicles with GNSS-based ETC systems to pass through without stopping.
The goal of the EoI is to identify experienced and capable companies that can deliver a robust, scalable, and efficient toll charging software. This software will be essential for the implementation of the GNSS-based electronic toll collection system in India.
Implementing the GNSS-based electronic toll collection system will facilitate smoother traffic flow on National Highways. It is expected to offer several benefits, such as barrier-less, free-flow tolling for a hassle-free riding experience and distance-based tolling where users pay only for the stretch they travel.
Moreover, the GNSS-based system aims to enhance the efficiency of toll collection by reducing leakages and identifying toll evaders.
This innovative approach seeks to modernize toll operations across India's National Highways, ensuring a more efficient and user-friendly experience for travelers.
