Ahmedabad may mandate EV charging in new buildings

This initiative is aligned with the Gujarat Electric Policy 2021, which offers subsidies ranging from INR 20,000 to INR 1.50 lakh for electric vehicles and their charging stations.
The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) plans to implement new electric vehicle (EV) charging requirements for upcoming buildings, as reported by the Times of India. The AMC's goal is to make EV charging stations a necessary feature in the blueprints for all new constructions.

Meanwhile, the corporation has issued tenders for 81 new charging points across the city which would be located in strategic locations such as Kankaria Kids City, Navrangpura Multilevel Parking, and under flyovers. Currently, there are over 15 charging stations on AMC-owned premises.

"We are stepping up our efforts to promote electric vehicles (EVs) in the city. Our plans include facilitating private entities to establish charging facilities at 81 locations across Ahmedabad," a senior AMC official told TOI.

AMC is also planning to convert its entire vehicle fleet to EVs, including providing e-cars to its officials. This highlights their strong commitment to an all-electric transportation system.

To boost the adoption of EV infrastructure, the AMC is offering incentives for installing charging stations in common areas of older residential societies and providing a complete exemption on vehicle tax for newly purchased electric vehicles.

This initiative is aligned with the Gujarat Electric Policy 2021, which offers subsidies ranging from INR 20,000 to INR 1.50 lakh for electric vehicles and their charging stations.

An amendment to the Comprehensive General Development Control Regulations (CGDCR) to mandate EV charging stations in new buildings is currently under review.

This strategy ensures that residential societies undergoing redevelopment will be equipped with EV charging infrastructure, promoting a sustainable future.

Efforts are also underway to expand the public e-charging network and foster partnerships with private entities to enhance the accessibility of EV charging facilities.

In a related development, ITC Sonar and ITC Royal Bengal inaugurated a state-of-the-art EV charging station on World Environment Day. The station includes both AC and DC chargers and can accommodate up to three vehicles simultaneously.
