New Delhi: JK Tyre & Industries has become the first tyre manufacturer in India to achieve the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) Plus for its Chennai plant.

Gaining ISCC Plus status involves meeting various criteria such as traceability of raw materials, environmental regulation compliance, ecosystem preservation, and support for labor and human rights, as well as promoting sustainable economic development. The Indian counterpart of the certification body based in Kolkata conducted the comprehensive final audit.

"Green manufacturing embodies our commitment to sustainable development. By reducing our carbon footprint and utilizing resources judiciously, we have consistently set industry standards over the years. This recognition is a significant milestone for JK Tyre and motivates us to continue our dedication to sustainable practices," stated Dr. Raghupati Singhania, Chairman and Managing Director of JK Tyre.

JK Tyre has set an ambitious goal to become a carbon-neutral brand by 2050 and plans to reduce its carbon intensity by 50% by 2030. The Science-Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) has endorsed the company’s commitment to cutting overall greenhouse gas emissions.

The JK Tyre Chennai plant has a history of accolades. It was declared a zero-liquid discharge facility in 2021 and titled "National Energy Leader" at the 21st National Award for Excellence in Energy Management in 2020. In 2017, the International Research Institute for Manufacturing acknowledged the plant for its sustainability and green manufacturing practices. Additionally, the facility has garnered the "Excellent Energy Efficient Unit" award from CII for six consecutive years since 2015.

ISCC Plus is a voluntary certification that focuses on bio-based and circular (recycled) raw materials. This certification is awarded after a stringent verification process that confirms adherence to ISCC requirements, including the traceability of certified materials throughout the entire supply chain, from their origin to the finished product.
