New Delhi: The US-based semiconductor manufacturer onsemi has inked a multi-year agreement with Volkswagen Group to serve as the primary supplier for a complete power box solution in the next-generation traction inverter for Volkswagen's Scalable Systems Platform (SSP).

Using silicon carbide-based technologies, the integrated module can scale across various power levels, making it suitable for all vehicle categories. This partnership aims to enhance efficiency and performance while reducing costs.

The power box solution, based on EliteSiC M3e MOSFETs, can handle more power in a compact package, thereby significantly reducing energy losses. The inclusion of three integrated half-bridge modules mounted on a cooling channel will ensure effective heat management, which will improve performance, control heat, and increase efficiency. This allows electric vehicles (EVs) to have a longer range on a single charge.

“By offering a complete power system solution that encompasses the entire power sub-assembly, we provide Volkswagen Group with a single, simplified modular and scalable platform that maximizes efficiency and performance for their vehicle lineup,” Hassane El-Khoury, president and CEO of onsemi, said. “This new approach allows for the customization of power needs and the addition of features for different vehicles without compromising on performance, all while reducing cost.”

Volkswagen Group's first tranche in the SSP platform will benefit from onsemi's deeply verticalized supply chain. Dirk Große-Loheide, Member of the Extended Executive Committee Group Procurement and Member of the Board Volkswagen Brand for “Procurement," praised the partnership.

“We are very pleased to have onsemi as a strategic supplier for the power box of the traction inverter for our first tranche in the SSP platform. onsemi has convinced us with a deeply verticalized supply chain from the growth of the raw material up to the assembly of the power box,” Dirk Große-Loheide said.

The resilient supply concept, featuring regional silicon carbide fabs in Asia, Europe, and the US, further strengthens the collaboration. onsemi will also continuously provide the latest SiC generation to ensure competitiveness, according to Till von Bothmer, Senior Vice President VW Group Procurement for Powertrain.

“On top of the verticalization, onsemi has also provided a resilient supply concept with regional silicon carbide fabs across Asia, Europe and the US. In addition, onsemi will continuously provide the latest SiC generation to ensure competitiveness,” Till von Bothmer said.

Additionally, onsemi plans to invest in expanding its silicon carbide manufacturing in the Czech Republic. This investment will create an end-to-end production facility in Europe for the traction inverter power system, enhancing Volkswagen Group's supply chain and logistics.

The proximity of onsemi's facility will allow for faster integration into Volkswagen's manufacturing process, further fortifying their supply chain.
