Tata Motors on Wednesday launched Curvy.ev-- its fifth EV offering since it entered the market of battery-operated vehicles (BoVs) in 2020.

Boasting of top-of-the-line features typically found in premium segments, the SUV coupe is priced at INR 17.49 lakh for the 45kWh battery and INR 19.25 lakh for the 55kWh battery.

Tata Motors would also be commencing the bookings and deliveries of the petrol and diesel-powered variants of the SUV coupe, next month.

The bookings for the EV model will open from August 12 and deliveries will commence on August 23. It claims a certified long driving range of 585 km on a single charge for 55kWh and 502 km for 45kWh

“With a starting price of INR 17.49 lakh for the Curvv.ev 45, we are boldly bringing price parity between EVs and equivalent ICE vehicles,” said Shailesh Chandra, managing director, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicle and Passenger Electric Mobility. The pricing addresses one of the biggest barriers in EV adoption, he said at the launch.

By pricing it lower than the comparable automatic transmission variant of petrol-powered mid-size SUV, Tata Motors is looking to woo petrol buyers of mid-size SUVs. For instance, Hyundai Creta (automatic) is priced at INR 18.83 lakh.

Curvv.ev claims to have an estimated real-world range of 400-425km with its largest battery pack of 55kWh. Its specially designed fast charging capability ensures a top-up of 150km range in just 15-minutes, the company said.

The electric car market leader that controls almost 68% of the EV segment, is adding to its line-up at a time it has entered a slow lane since the last six to eight months after a fast-paced growth.

Electric car registration in India dropped 2.92% to 7541 units in July, amid slow adoption among buyers, discontinuation of the government’s upfront subsidy scheme for the fleet segment and a slowdown in the broader passenger vehicle market.

Dismissing the concerns of the slowing EV sales Chandra said that one shouldn’t get overly concerned with the short-term trend. “I am not worried about the future of EVs because this is bound to grow very fast in the coming years,” he said.

He also exuded optimism over the recovery of the broader car market. Fuelled by the new launches as a run up to the festive season, he expects the market to recover in the second half of the year.

Passenger vehicle sales are estimated to have fallen around 2.5% to 344000-345,900 units, for the first time in two and a half years in July, monthly sales data released by manufacturers showed. It dropped as automakers curtailed dispatches amid sluggish demand and high dealer inventory after a two-year post-pandemic boom.
