Huawei has expanded its portfolio in the electric vehicle (EV) market by launching the Huawei Stelato S9 electric sedan in collaboration with BAIC Motors. This follows the launch of Xiaomi's electric car, the SU7, as both Chinese electronics giants venture into the automotive sector. Known for its digital communications technology products, Huawei is now making a significant foray into the EV space with this new model.

Measuring 5,160 mm in length, 1,987 mm in width, and 1,486 mm in height, the Huawei Stelato S9 is even longer and wider than the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Long-Wheelbase version. The sedan is available in two versions in China: S9 Max and S9 Ultra. The base price of the Stelato S9 starts at 399,800 yuan or approximately INR 47 lakhs. The single-motor setup variant offers 304 bhp, while the more expensive dual-motor version with All-Wheel Drive (AWD) capabilities offers 516 bhp. However, the top speed for both versions is capped at 214 kmph.

The collaboration between Huawei and BAIC Motors marks the first joint project manifesting in the form of the Stelato S9 electric sedan. BAIC Motors is a well-established name in the Chinese automobile market, and Huawei aims to leverage this partnership to establish a foothold in the EV industry. The Stelato S9 gets an aerodynamic profile, darkened lights, pop-out door handles, LIDAR for assisted and/or automated driving capabilities, cameras in place of conventional side mirrors, and large alloy wheels.

In terms of battery options, customers can choose between 79.9 kWh and 97.6 kWh units, which promise a cruising range of over 650 kilometers per charge.

Huawei's entry into the automotive sector is noteworthy, given its estimated market worth of close to USD 500 billion. The company has been eyeing the EV market for some time now, with teaser images of the Stelato S9 appearing on Chinese social media sites throughout 2024. The official launch of this electric sedan marks Huawei's more pronounced shift into the automobile industry, with a focus on innovative technology and design.

The Stelato S9 represents a significant addition to Huawei's growing EV lineup, which already includes models like the SERES SF5 and Aito M5. The joint venture with BAIC Motors aims to blend Huawei's technological expertise with BAIC's automotive experience, potentially setting the stage for more collaborative projects in the future.

Huawei’s venture into the EV market with the Stelato S9 electric sedan highlights its ambition to diversify beyond conventional consumer electronics. As the company continues to innovate and expand, it will be interesting to see how it shapes the future of the automotive industry.
