Amit Shah stated that the government’s ethanol blending programme has helped reduce the country’s crude oil import bill and tackled environmental concerns.
“You need to be futuristic and look at opportunities and expand. Ethanol can be made from multiple sources,” Shah said. He encouraged cooperative sugar mills to move away from their “orthodox” approach and consider alternative feedstocks such as maize and bamboo.
Shah mentioned that around 1,000 crore litres of ethanol is needed for blending, and the necessary infrastructure to meet this target is already established. He emphasised the need for sugar mills to modernise and adopt new technologies, noting potential export opportunities with the future establishment of the Global Biofuels Alliance.
The minister challenged the NFCSF to expand its operations, proposing that the federation establish one cooperative sugar mill for every three districts in four states within a year.
Shah also advised NFCSF to hire professionals to guide loss-making cooperatives.
