Vehicle scrapping facility at Marcaim 70% complete

To make it financially attractive for owners to replace old vehicles with newer, less polluting models, the vehicle scrapping policy introduced incentives for vehicle owners.
The registered vehicle scrapping facility (RVSF) in Goa has achieved 70% progress and is scheduled to become operational by Sep this year. RVSF is currently under construction at Marcaim Industrial Estate.

“It will be achieved as per the timeline set for Goa,” said transport director, Pravimal Abhishek. “We can still send vehicles to RVSFs to other states but having a facility in Goa will reduce transportation cost,” said Abhishek.

Aligned with the Motor vehicles (registration and functions of vehicle scrapping facility) rules, 2021, scrapping facilities across the country are set to provide an environmentally friendly solution for disposing of old and unfit vehicles through a scientific scrapping process. The timeline for Goa to set up RVSF is Oct 2024.

This facility aims to address the issue of pollution from ageing vehicles, which often contribute significantly to environmental degradation. Currently, approximately 1.9 lakh vehicles in Goa surpass the 15-year mark. Under this policy, the transport department has ceased renewing fitness certificates for govt vehicles exceeding 15 years. So far 520 vehicles of central and state govt, civic bodies, and transport undertakings have been set aside for scrapping in Goa.

To make it financially attractive for owners to replace old vehicles with newer, less polluting models, the vehicle scrapping policy introduced incentives for vehicle owners. Vehicle owners who make use of the policy and who scrap their old, polluting vehicles are eligible for tax concessions on new vehicle purchases. Specifically, non-transport vehicles can receive up to 25% off on motor vehicle tax while transport vehicles will benefit from a 15% reduction.
