Sanjay Mittal directed NHAI to install speed limit and other road signs on the highways as per the rules.
During a review meeting by the Supreme Court Committee on Road Safety at the state transport department on Sunday, it instructed officials to identify highways in the state with high mortality rate. Sanjay Mittal, secretary of the committee, who was chairing the meeting, provided necessary guidelines to all the officers of the State Road Safety Cell and road safety stakeholder departments.

He suggested preparing a list of first responders in rural areas, maintaining their records using technology, and tracking them. Mittal also appreciated the innovations being done in the field of road safety in the state and suggested sharing the efforts being made, especially for trauma care, with other states. He directed the lead agency to bring a pedestrian policy for the safety of pedestrians.

He emphasised the maximum use of the Integrated Road Accident Database (IRAD) in necessary decisions related to road safety in the state, enforcement, operation of activities, and policy making, etc. He also emphasised that all the stakeholder departments should update the correct data in IRAD in a timely manner.

“He suggested increasing manpower in various departments for data management in IRAD. In view of the current road safety efforts and innovations being made in the state, he reiterated the committee's directions to fill the vacant posts in the State Road Safety Cell (Lead Agency) as soon as possible, strengthen the institutional structure of the Lead Agency as per the need, and provide administrative and financial autonomy,” said a statement issued by the state transport department.

While reviewing police and NHAI’s work, Mittal took the mortality rate on national highways seriously. Along with this, he directed NHAI to install speed limit and other road signs on the highways as per the rules.

In the meeting, additional transport commissioner Nidhi Singh presented the road safety efforts and innovations being done in the state through a presentation.
