The panel discussions focused on the coexistence of multiple technologies beyond EVs, including the rise of hydrogen and hybrid energy sources as alternatives for powering future vehicles.
On Saturday, August 31st, the IIM Bangalore Alumni Association's Mobility Special Interest Group (IIMBAA Mobility SIG) organised the Global Mobility Summit 2024 at the IIMB campus. Under the theme "Navigating Challenging Landscapes," the event brought together over 250 participants, including industry leaders, innovators, and thought leaders, with more than 30 distinguished speakers sharing their insights on the future of mobility.

The summit began with a keynote address from Raghavendra Vaidya, Managing Director & CEO of DTIC, India, who stressed the importance of partnerships and collaborations in the evolving mobility landscape. Vaidya highlighted the essential role that startups and academic institutions will play in driving innovation over the next five years, setting the tone for the day’s discussions.

Suraj Gajendra from ARM and Dattatreya Gaur from BOSCH delivered keynotes that was focused on the growing influence of Software Defined Vehicles (SDVs) as the next significant wave in the automotive industry. It was discussed how SDVs are set to revolutionise vehicle functionality, connectivity, and user experience, with AI and software increasingly central to automotive innovation.

Technologies powering the future vehicles

The panel discussions focused on the coexistence of multiple technologies beyond electric vehicles (EVs), including the rise of hydrogen and hybrid energy sources as alternatives for powering future vehicles. A significant discussion revolved around the Indian government’s vision of Vikasith Bharath 2047, where the concept of "Make in India for the World" was thoroughly examined. Panelists engaged in an in-depth conversation on how India can position itself as a global leader in manufacturing and innovation, in line with this long-term vision.

Vinod Tahiliani, CFO of Reliance BP Mobility Ltd, provided a special address on the future of mobility, offering thought-provoking insights into the transition from an energy substitution economy to one that is energy additive. Tahiliani’s perspective on the evolving energy landscape was a key highlight of the event, prompting deeper reflection on sustainable mobility solutions.

A collaborative effort for changing mobility ecosystem

The summit also addressed the shifting global landscape, highlighting the increasing role of ecosystems and startups, government policies, the semiconductor industry, and fostering an innovation culture within organisations. These discussions were crucial in understanding how to build a resilient and forward-looking mobility ecosystem.

IIM Bangalore initiative towards sustainability

The summit also marked the announcement of a research initiative to be carried out by IIM Bangalore in collaboration with industry leaders, focusing on Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) practices across the mobility industry. This initiative aims to drive forward the industry’s commitment to sustainability and responsible innovation.

The highlights of the Summit were-

* Software Defined Vehicles (SDVs) are set to have a transformative impact on the mobility ecosystem.
* The exploration of alternative fuel options is essential to achieving zero tailpipe emissions and advancing sustainability goals.
* The rapid pace of technological change presents challenges in long-term capital allocation and investment decisions.
* Collaboration across the mobility ecosystem is no longer optional but a necessity. OEMs are increasingly partnering with competitors to accelerate innovation, minimize time to market, and mitigate the risks of rapid technological obsolescence.

Overall, the Global Mobility Summit 2024 emphasised in advancing IIMBAA Mobility SIG’s mission to make India a key hub for innovation in the global mobility ecosystem. The event not only facilitated rich dialogues but also laid the groundwork for future collaborations that will drive the mobility industry forward.

Partners for this Summit were ARM and NXP as Platinum and Gold sponsors of the event, respectively. TATA Elxsi sponsored the ESG Research initiative, while ETAuto served as the Media Partner. The Summit was also supported by NSRCEL as the Startup Partner.
