Ford announced on September 13, 2024, its intention to repurpose its Chennai plant in India for manufacturing vehicles aimed at export markets as part of its Ford+ growth plan. The decision was confirmed through a Letter of Intent submitted to the Government of Tamil Nadu following a meeting between Ford leadership and the Chief Minister during his visit to the United States.

All about Ford's re-entry

The Chennai facility will be repurposed to concentrate on manufacturing for global markets. Ford's initiative aligns with its broader Ford+ strategy aimed at enhancing growth. The specifics of the type of manufacturing and other relevant details will be shared at a later date.

“We are grateful for the ongoing support from the Tamil Nadu Government as we explored different options for the Chennai plant,” said Kay Hart, president, Ford International Markets Group. “This step aims to underscore our ongoing commitment to India as we intend to leverage the manufacturing expertise available in Tamil Nadu to serve new global markets.”

Ford's expansion strategy

Currently, Ford employs about 12,000 individuals in Global Business Operations in Tamil Nadu. The company plans to increase this number by approximately 2,500 to 3,000 jobs within the next three years. Additionally, Ford’s engine manufacturing operations in Sanand contribute to making India the company's second-largest salaried workforce worldwide. Further elaboration on the manufacturing plans for the Chennai plant will be disclosed in due course, reflecting Ford's continued investment and interest in India's manufacturing capabilities.
