Renesas is in a position to meet the changing demands of the Indian automotive sector, where the use of EVs is growing quickly.

Japanese semiconductor manufacturer, Renesas Electronics is deepening its commitment to the Indian market with the expansion of its research and development (R&D) operations. According to Vivek Bhan, Senior Vice President and General Manager of the High Performance Compute Solutions Group, Renesas has established R&D centers in Bangalore, Hyderabad, and most recently, Delhi. This expansion reflects the company’s strategy to tap into India's growing automotive and industrial markets while leveraging the country’s vast engineering talent pool.

Bhan described the functions of Renesas' R&D centers, noting that Bangalore concentrated on software and design, Hyderabad on software, and Delhi on design in particular. “We have a significant footprint in India, and we’ve been growing steadily. The establishment of the Delhi R&D center is part of our ongoing investment in India, which we see as a critical market,” Bhan noted.

In an effort to improve its skills in India, Renesas is also actively collaborating with local partners. It recently established an outsourced semiconductor assembly and test (OSAT) partnership with CG Power, which is a step toward strengthening the local supply chain. "Partnerships like these enable us to accelerate innovation and bring customised solutions to the Indian market," Bhan stated.

Possibilities in the automotive and IoT sectors in India

Renesas is in a position to meet the changing demands of the Indian automotive sector, where the use of EVs is growing quickly. Bhan emphasised the company's leadership in system-on-chips (SoCs) and microcontrollers (MCUs) for connected automobile solutions, autonomous driving, and electric vehicle architectures. “There is a significant shift happening in automotive architecture, driven by electrification and autonomous driving. Renesas is uniquely equipped to service these trends with our portfolio of automotive-grade SoCs and MCUs,” Bhan stated.

Beyond automotive, Renesas sees major growth in the industrial and IoT sectors. “We offer highly optimised solutions for edge computing with AI extensions, and that’s where we’re seeing strong demand in India and globally.” The company is also innovating in power solutions with technologies like gallium nitride (GaN) and silicon carbide, critical for power-efficient applications across industries.

Potential for growth

It was noted how strategically significant India is to Renesas, both as a market and as a center for R&D supporting international operations. “India is an exciting market with immense potential, particularly in two-wheeler and emerging four-wheeler segments. Our investments in R&D and partnerships here are crucial for developing solutions that meet both local and global needs,” Bhan said.

Renesas intends to keep growing its footprint in research and development in India and to strengthen its partnerships with regional partners. "We will keep investing in talent, technology, and partnerships to drive innovation, as we see tremendous potential in the Indian market," Bhan concluded.
