The collaboration focuses on studying the adoption of hydrogen fuel cell systems and technologies, as well as energy-efficient solutions for mobility projects.
Hyundai Motor Company and Skoda Group have taken a significant step towards building a hydrogen mobility ecosystem by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at the Korea-Czech Republic Business Summit in Prague. The MoU outlines collaborative efforts to explore hydrogen fuel cell systems, energy-efficient mobility solutions, and broader hydrogen ecosystem opportunities beyond mobility.

A push towards hydrogen technology adoption

The signing ceremony was attended by Ken Ramírez, Executive Vice President and Head of Global Commercial Vehicle and Hydrogen Business at Hyundai Motor Company, and Petr Novotný, CEO of Skoda Group. This partnership aims to accelerate the adoption of hydrogen technology, contributing to global carbon neutrality goals and creating synergies between Hyundai's fuel cell technology and Skoda's mobility projects.

The collaboration focuses on studying the adoption of hydrogen fuel cell systems and technologies, as well as energy-efficient solutions for mobility projects. A significant part of the MoU is to explore the hydrogen ecosystem and its value chain opportunities beyond the realm of mobility.

“Our partnership with Skoda Group aims to accelerate hydrogen adoption, which would contribute to the advancement of hydrogen technology and carbon neutrality across global markets, including the Czech Republic,” said Executive Vice President Ramírez. “Together with Skoda Group, we strive to lead the rapidly growing hydrogen businesses by creating positive synergies between our fuel cell technology and Skoda Group’s mobility products and projects.”

Both Hyundai and Skoda see hydrogen as a foundation for a sustainable society. They plan to explore the potential of Hyundai's fuel cell system and technology to advance eco-friendly mobility in various global markets, including the Czech Republic. The collaboration will also involve feasibility studies to determine the applications of fuel cell systems beyond just mobility.

“We believe that hydrogen, alongside energy-efficient solutions, will play an essential role in transforming mobility for a more sustainable future. Our collaboration with Hyundai Motor Company aims at enabling us to look beyond national borders and explore wider markets where these technologies can have a larger impact. By working together, we can bring innovative, eco-friendly solutions to the global mobility ecosystem, advancing cleaner energy in the areas where it's needed most,” said Petr Novotný, CEO of Skoda Group.

What does this collaboration signify?

Leveraging its global expertise in operating hydrogen applications in mobility and energy sectors, Hyundai is well-positioned to support the energy transition globally. The company is committed to establishing a hydrogen society under its hydrogen value chain business brand, HTWO, which includes various stages of the hydrogen value chain.

Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Czech (HMMC), established in Nošovice in 2008, plays a significant role in this vision. With an annual manufacturing capacity of 350,000 vehicles, it is considered one of Europe's most modern car manufacturers and marks the largest foreign investment in the Czech Republic.

Through this collaboration, Hyundai and Skoda aim to address not just the mobility sector but also extend hydrogen solutions to other areas that require clean energy. The focus remains on innovating and bringing eco-friendly solutions to the market, thereby contributing to a more sustainable future. The partnership between these companies signifies a major step towards establishing a hydrogen-powered global mobility ecosystem.
