Car batteries play a critical role in a vehicle’s operation. It is responsible for many functions like ignition, powering the lights, and other electrical functions.

Therefore, ensuring a well-maintained battery is crucial for optimal performance. Fortunately, replacing a car battery is a straightforward task that you can easily accomplish at home, eliminating the need for costly visits to mechanics.

With just a few tools, you can ensure your vehicle operates smoothly and efficiently.

Here is your step-by-step guide to help you change your car battery and save you the cost of a repair shop.

Step 1: Locate the car battery

Park your vehicle on a level surface, turn off the engine, and remove the keys from the ignition. Allow the engine to cool down before locating and handling the battery. Most car batteries are situated in the engine compartment, either in front of the vehicle or on the driver’s side under the bonnet, mounted on a plastic or metal tray. In some cases, batteries may be positioned in the trunk at the back of the vehicle.

Step 2: Find and disconnect battery terminals

Identify the battery terminals, which include a positive (red) terminal and a negative (black) terminal with cable connectors attached. Using a wrench, loosen and disconnect the negative terminal cable first, then remove the positive terminal cable. Wear work gloves and eye protection to prevent accidents while handling the terminals.

Step 3: Lift out the old battery

Car batteries are typically secured with a hold-down metal clamp. Loosen the bolts or nuts securing the clamp, then carefully lift the battery out of its compartment. Maintain the battery in an upright position during removal, as they contain caustic liquid.

Step 4: Clean the battery tray and terminal connectors

After removing the old battery, thoroughly clean any corrosion from the battery tray and terminal connectors using a wire brush or terminal cleaning tool. You can also use a baking soda paste for cleaning. Inspect the connectors and cables for fraying or damage, as stated by HT Auto.

Step 5: Place the new battery and reconnect the terminals

Position the new battery in the tray, ensuring the terminals align correctly with the car’s terminals. Lower the battery securely onto the mounting shelf and reattach the hold-down clamp, tightening the bolts or nuts. Reconnect the positive cable to the battery first, followed by the negative cable. Apply battery anti-corrosive protection gel or protective felt washers to both terminals if desired.

Step 6: Test the connection

Turn on the car’s headlights to check if the battery is functioning properly after installation.
