New Delhi, May 11 (IANS) Mahindra Group Chairman Anand Mahindra has praised the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras startup that is developing an electric flying taxi, saying that the institution has become one of the world's most "exciting and active incubators".

Anand Mahindra, Chairman of the Mahindra Group, has unveiled images of India's first electric flying taxi prototype, marking a significant advancement in the country's journey towards electric air mobility. The prototype, developed by the ePlane Company, an initiative at the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras, is set to be operational by next year, showcasing India's strides in innovative transportation solutions.

Mahindra's Appreciation for IIT Madras
Mahindra commended IIT Madras for its role as a dynamic incubator of innovation, stating, "IIT Madras has become one of the world's most exciting and active incubators. Thanks to them and the rapidly growing number of ambitious incubators throughout India, we’re no longer seen as a country that lacks genuine innovators." His remarks underscore India's evolving reputation as a global hub for cutting-edge technology and innovation.

The ePlane e200
The ePlane e200, a two-seater aircraft developed by the ePlane Company, boasts a travel range of 200 kilometers, making it ideal for intra-city commute and cargo transportation. With a cruise speed of 160 kmph and a top speed of 200 kmph, the ePlane e200 promises to significantly reduce travel time and alleviate urban traffic congestion.

IIT Madras' Contribution to Innovation
The ePlane Company, founded in 2017 at IIT Madras by aerospace engineering professor Satya Chakravarthy and his student Pranjal Mehta, aims to revolutionize urban transportation. Chakravarthy explained, "Designed for up to 10X faster intra-city commute and cargo transportation, we aim to alleviate on-road traffic congestion in cities through our flagship product, the ePlane e200."

He later mentioned that, when completely charged, its range is up to 200 kilometres. “It is up to 10X faster than road-based vehicles like cabs and has a 160 kmph cruise speed and a top speed of 200 kmph. It can carry two people, including a pilot, or 200 kg of luggage.”
The unveiling of India's first electric flying taxi prototype represents a major milestone in the country's pursuit of sustainable transportation solutions. With the support of institutions like IIT Madras and visionary leaders like Anand Mahindra, India is poised to lead the way in electric air mobility, setting an example for innovation worldwide.
