The highway sector has so far achieved monetisation of INR 1.1 lakh crore.

New Delhi: The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has identified 33 projects for monetisation to raise INR 45,000 crore during the current financial year, nearly 12% more than 2023-24. The projects with cumulative length of 2,742 km are spread across 12 states.

The assets would be monetised through Toll Operate Transfer (TOT) and InvIT modes. Officials said most projects will be monetised through TOT, in which the successful bidders make upfront payments to NHAI and they get the right to maintain, operate and collect toll for 20 years. An Infrastructure Investment Trust (InvIT) is like a mutual fund, which enables direct investment from individual and institutional investors in infrastructure projects to earn a portion of the income as return.

"We are confident of surpassing this target as the projects identified are lucrative for investors and the trend of toll collection is robust on these stretches. As the economy is doing well, the investors will get a return for their money," said an NHAI official. The identified stretches include 333-km Kanpur-Ayodhya-Gorakhpur, 226-km Gurgaon-Jaipur, Haridwar-Muzaffarpur (74 km) and Chennai Bypass (32 km). The annual toll collection on the 33 identified stretches is around INR 4,931 crore.

Under govt's national asset monetisation pipeline, the road and highway sector has got the highest target of monetising projects worth around INR 1.6 lakh crore by March 2025. The highway sector has so far achieved monetisation of INR 1.1 lakh crore.
