Unable To Trust Yourself? These Tips Will Help

Do you often find yourself in people-pleasing situations? You might ignore your own feelings to make others happy. Klara, an influencer and educator, helps people recover from this habit. She teaches about rebuilding self-trust. Distrust in ourselves starts small but grows. “Distrust in ourselves can manifest in subtle but impactful ways. It often begins when we ignore our instincts, dismiss our needs, second-guess our reactions, and invalidate our emotions,” she writes.

In her latest Instagram post, Klara shared examples and explains how distrusting ourselves can have subtle yet significant effects on our lives.

As per her post, one common example of this self-doubt is ignoring that gut feeling telling you something isn’t right. Our instincts are powerful signals that often guide us toward making the best decisions for our well-being. However, when we habitually ignore these gut feelings, we start to undermine our own ability to judge what is best for us. For instance, you might have had a sense that a particular job or relationship wasn’t right for you, but you dismissed it, perhaps due to external pressures.

Over time, ignoring these gut feelings can lead to a pattern where you no longer trust your instincts, causing anxiety and uncertainty in making decisions.

Another example is minimising your needs because you believe they’re not as important as others. This behavior stems from a desire to be liked or to avoid conflict. You might find yourself constantly putting others’ needs before your own.

For example, if a friend or family member needs help, you might drop everything to assist them, even if it means neglecting your own health or responsibilities. However, consistently minimising your needs can lead to burnout and resentment, as you are constantly depriving yourself of the care and attention you deserve.

Over thinking your natural reactions to situations is the way distrust in oneself can manifest. You might find yourself questioning whether your feelings are appropriate or justified. For example, if you feel hurt or disappointed by someone’s actions, you might immediately start to second-guess your reaction. You begin thinking if you’re being too sensitive or are overreacting. This over-thinking can prevent you from fully processing your emotions.

Another major sign, as per Klara’s post is dismissing compliments or achievements. You start believing you don’t deserve them, which is another common behavior associated with self-doubt. When someone praises your work or acknowledges your accomplishments, you might downplay their words, thinking they are just being polite or that you haven’t truly earned the praise. This can prevent you from fully appreciating your own efforts and successes.

Constantly asking others what you should think or feel about certain things is another manifestation of self-doubt. Instead of trusting your own judgment, you might frequently seek out the opinions and validation of others. This can be seen in scenarios where you ask friends or family for their thoughts on decisions that you are perfectly capable of making yourself. Over time, this reliance on external validation can erode your confidence in your own ability to make sound judgments.

Each of these behaviors reinforces the belief that you can’t trust yourself. But here’s the encouraging part: you can start to rebuild that trust. Through targeted exercises and reflective practices, you can learn to trust your instincts, honour your emotions, and confidently meet your needs.
