Diabetes is a serious health issue that can be controlled but not completely cured. Maintaining a healthy diet along with regular workouts can help to maintain the diabetes level, while keeping the body active and strong. Around 10.1 crore people suffer from diabetes in India. Doctors suggest various methods to reduce the increasing blood sugar level. Fruits are generally considered beneficial for health, but some fruits can increase the blood sugar level, which can highly affect a diabetic patient. A diabetic person is also advised not to drink fruit juice as it contains a high amount of sugar.

Senior Ayurvedic expert Dr Vinay Khuller explained that fruits do provide essential nutrients and fibres that are needed. There are some fruits that can be dangerous for a diabetic patient as they contain high amounts of sugar that can significantly increase the blood sugar level of a diabetic person. The fruits that should be avoided are mangoes, sapota, bananas, pineapples, litchi and grapes. Apples, oranges, guavas, papayas, strawberries, and some fruits that a diabetic patient can consume.

While everyone loves to eat mango, it is advised to avoid it if someone is diabetic. A very small quantity can only be consumed, as the sugar level in the mangoes is generally very high. The high sugar content can rapidly increase the body sugar level which can be fatal for a diabetic patient. Dr Vinay Khuller said, “If a diabetic patient wants to eat mangoes that person can consume just one or two slices but not more than that. It is better to avoid it as the sugar level in the fruit is very high.”

Consumption of Bananas should also be limited as they contain a high glycemic index, which drastically can increase the sugar level of a patient. Consumption of bananas should either be avoided or limited. Litchi has the highest sugar content which can rapidly increase blood sugar levels.
