Five Things To Avoid If You Are Eating Pomegranates

A pomegranate is a sweet and tart fruit with a thick crimson peel. The skin is not edible, but it contains hundreds of delicious seeds that can be eaten alone or sprinkled on salads, cereals, and other foods. Pomegranates are most commonly enjoyed by cutting them open and removing the skin to reveal the edible seeds and aril-like juice sacs.

Due to its possible health benefits, people have been consuming this fruit for a long time. As per reports, it might improve heart health or lessen the severity of arthritis. However, it might not be a healthy food combination to combine it with some fruits. It might also interfere with any medications you use to treat medical disorders. Here’s more to know about what not to mix with pomegranate.

Pomegranate: What Are The Health Benefits?

  • Fertility: Pomegranate seed extract and fruit extract have been shown to protect embryos from oxidative stress. As a result, the expert believes it may benefit both male and female fertility.

  • Arthritis: It is a degenerative joint condition induced by an inflammatory response in the body. According to a 2021 study published in the International Journal of Clinical Practice, pomegranate may help control rheumatoid arthritis problems by lowering inflammation and oxidative stress.

  • Heart health: Pomegranate has plenty of antioxidants, including flavonoids and anthocyanins. A qualified dietitian from the Indian Dietetic Association claims that they can help reduce oxidative stress and fat buildup in blood vessels. These antioxidants can lower bad cholesterol, or low-density lipoproteins (LDL) while increasing good cholesterol, or high-density lipoprotein (HDL), thus supporting heart health.

Pomegranates: What Should Not Be Mixed?

When combined with certain drugs, pomegranate can be dangerous.

  • Warfarin: It is a medicine used to regulate coagulation, often known as blood thinners. Pomegranate may interact with warfarin, according to a 2018 study published in the Journal of Food and Drug Analysis. It may cause an increase in blood clotting in Warfarin-treated patients.

  • Nitrendipine: It is a calcium channel blocker that is prescribed to treat hypertension or high blood pressure. According to experts, drinking pomegranate juice regularly may reduce drug metabolism in the intestinal tract.

  • Sweet fruits: Pomegranates are considered sub-acidic, or low acidic fruits. As a result, pairing them with sweet fruits such as bananas is not a good idea. Combining the two can cause digestive issues.

  • Statin: Statins are medications used to reduce LDL cholesterol. In rare situations, combining it with pomegranate may result in rhabdomyolysis, a condition in which muscle tissue breaks down and causes kidney damage.

  • ACE inhibitors: These drugs are used to prevent diabetic kidneys and treat heart failure. Pomegranate juice may have some of the same properties as these medicines, making them overly potent, resulting in adverse effects such as dizziness and headaches.
