There have been a few cases where it was reported that women have grown a beard or a moustache. Is this natural or a sign of some underlying health issues? Reportedly, many women experience an increase in hair growth around the face, ears and chin. This sudden increase in facial hair might be due to excessive production of androgen hormones including testosterone. Generally, the production of androgen is less in a female’s body in comparison to men. But, when the hormonal level increases, women may notice the growth of facial hair. Dr Rahul Balmiki, Dermatologist of Government Medical College, Kannauj, listed a few reasons which could be the cause of facial hair growth in women.

Hirsutism

Hirsutism is a medical condition that causes excessive hair growth on parts of the body like the upper lip, chin, chest and back. The main symptom of hirsutism is dark hair growth.

Adrenal Gland Disorder

The adrenal glands located near triangular-shaped glands are responsible for regulating many bodily functions like metabolism, immune system, blood pressure, response to stress, heart rate and developing sexual characteristics. Sometimes there are hormonal imbalances by birth or genetics.

PCOS

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is the formation of cysts (lumps) in ovaries that causes hormonal production. Sometimes, certain medicines for PCOS cause abnormal hair growth in women. If a woman notices a sudden increase in facial hair or other parts of the body, then they must consult a doctor without any delay.

Excessive caffeine intake

Intake of four to five cups of coffee can cause hormonal imbalance and increase the production of testosterone in women’s bodies. As per research, a high intake of coffee for a longer time may lead to detrimental effects on health.

Stress and smoking

Excessive stress can also be a reason for the growth of facial hair. It also disturbs the hormonal imbalance of the body and leads to thick and unwanted hair growth on the face. Excessive drinking and smoking can take a toll on your health and lead to hormonal imbalances.

Lack of Sleep

For the proper functioning of the body, we need to rest and get adequate sleep. Lack of sleep or sleeplessness will cause you to be tired. This, as per the expert, can also be yet another reason for sudden hair growth on the face.
