Salt is a requirement when you have to give your meal the right taste. The intake of salt could vary from person to person, it is associated with a number of health related issues. Here’s why you should consume salt in moderate to low amounts, and how its high consumption can affect the body. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), almost every person is a consumer of excess salt. According to more information, higher salt intake could lead to the conditions of high blood pressure, heart diseases, gastric cancer, obesity, osteoporosis and kidney disease. The WHO estimates that every year 1.89 million people lose their lives due to high salt consumption. A new study shows that if you want to avoid high salt consumption then you can use salt substitutes, which may lower the risk of premature death by a good margin.

According to a study published in the annals of Internal Medicine Journal, using a salt substitute for a long time could help your heart become healthier, increasing its life. As per more information, the study was conducted on around 35,000 individuals, carrying an average age of 64 years suffering from some kind of a heart-related ailment. When they substituted salt with other alternatives in their food, a considerable change was observed in their health. The researchers discovered low sodium levels in the urine as well as a stabilised blood pressure. The author of the study, Dr Loi, a professor from the University of Australia, stated, “Low salt intake or salt substitute intake certainly reduces the risk of premature death.”

The WHO recommends a salt consumption of less than 5 grams for every person, as it could help prevent cardiovascular diseases, the main cause for most deaths in the world. Instead of salt, you can try consuming items like garlic, ginger, lemon juice, dried onions, onion powder and more. To reduce your salt consumption, you can use apple vinegar, rosemary, coriander, sage, cinnamon and other types of spices.
