How The Right Kind Of Music Can Supercharge You While Studying

Many believe that listening to music boosts productivity and helps learning ability during study or work sessions. But, your favourite tunes might actually be a distraction. While music can uplift mood and reduce feelings of loneliness, it can also be a distraction, especially during tasks that require deep focus. Content creator Rajan Singh recently suggested that listening to songs while studying may overload your memory, causing a clash with studying. However, Singh claims that instrumental music, without any lyrics, can be less harmful.

Clinical psychologist Neha Parashar from Cadabams Mindtalk explains that music has the potential to uplift mood and it can be motivating for some. The expert also believes that loud music or music with complex lyrics may decrease performance. She further elaborates that genres like ambient music, which have consistent and soothing rhythms, are beneficial and they won’t easily divert your attention. In this article, we delve into types of melodies that boost your study sessions and those that might hinder your focus-

  1. Songs with understandable lyrics can more likely distract you from your tasks when you’re trying to focus.
  2. While classical music is often recommended, you can also explore ambient, peaceful or soft tracks if classical isn’t your preference.
  3. Songs that change suddenly or experimental melodies can confuse your brain and disrupt your concentration.
  4. Background music for studying should remain softly audible and high volume levels can interfere with your thinking.
  5. Select songs that neither provoke positive nor negative emotions, as they can impact your ability to stay focused.
  6. Avoid interruptions during your study sessions by choosing ad-free music platforms to maintain your focus and avoid distractions.
  7. Consider listening to chants or natural sounds such as rain or animal noises, as they can create a relaxing atmosphere favourable for studying.
  8. Pre-plan your playlist before you start studying, this way you can avoid interruptions when choosing a particular song.
  9. Stay away from the radio while studying, as RJ’s constant chatter and advertisements can divert your attention from your tasks.
  10. Set your playlist to last for around 50-60 minutes to help you stay on track and take regular breaks, helping you maintain focus and productivity.
