Almost every couple face several challenges in their relationship over time. As time passes, many people might notice that the excitement, the fire and the passion that was there during the initial days, are slowly fading away. While it might feel heartbreaking, it does not mean that your partner doesn’t love you any more or that your relationship is over. Facing these kinds of issues is pretty common in any relationship.

Chris Perry, a relationship coach and a best-selling author took to Instagram to explain this. “People tend to quit when it stops being fun, and they go look for something else because the “spark is gone”. No, that’s now how it works. You want somebody to never give up on you, and love you unconditionally then do the same,” says Chris.

“Be the change. Love someone when you don’t want to, when they aren’t the easiest to deal with. When they’re hard to love. That’s as real as it gets,” he adds.

However, there are several ways in which couples can make their relationship stronger and ignite that spark again.

Try holding hands more often:

According to Dr Meghna Singhal, a psychotherapist, holding your partner’s hands curates a bond that will impact your love relationship significantly. “Holding hands, hugging and touching can release oxytocin and reduce stress hormones letting you experience calming sensations with your partner,” she explains.

Love is not the only fuel in the relationship:

Don’t just let love take your relationship forward. Both partners need to contribute to make things work between them for a longer period, says Dr Shefali, a clinical psychologist. “Many of us enter long-term relationships and realize that intimacy or the love is fading. Well, it’s because we’re looking for love in all the wrong places. Intimacy or a relationship with another is not for love alone,” she says.

Spend some time together:

Get rid of your phone and office work and try to spend some quality time with your partner. Talk to them about how their day was and tell yours or do some interesting activities together. Understand, that communication is the key. One needs to express himself directly to the partner to bring that spark in the relationship again.

Avoid negativity, don’t be unresponsive:

According to Jordan Dann, a therapist being unresponsive to your partner’s bid for connection will create a negative atmosphere. “Instead, consider beginning the morning with care and connection. It’s important to be available to be responsive to your partner’s bids for connection. This encourages unconditional positive regard,” he says.

Prioritise your relationship:

Prioritising your relationship is one of the most important factors in bringing that connection back with your partner. Pay attention to what your partner’s likes and dislikes are, what’s their favourite place to eat, what makes them feel safe or what their insecurities are. Small things matter. Try different ways to make your partner feel happy.
