Experts Share Tips On How To Reverse Hair Damage Without Getting Keratin Or Botox

Due to the current environmental conditions characterized by rising pollution levels in urban areas, it has become increasingly challenging to protect hair from damage. Furthermore, as individuals age, the cumulative impact of their lifestyle choices can significantly affect the health and quality of their hair. More than often we resort to treatments such as hair botox and keratin to remedy our hair condition.

In addition to the high cost, it’s important to consider that these treatments may also come with potential side effects that should be carefully weighed. However, it must be noted that these treatments are not bad either, with the right guidance they can definitely do wonders to your hair but there are other ways to reverse hair damage as well.

Dr. Geetika Mittal Gupta, Aesthetic physician and founder of ISAAC Luxe (International Skin & Anti-Aging Centre), says, “Repairing damaged hair without resorting to keratin treatments or Botox injections is entirely feasible with the right strategies. It all starts with finding the underlying causes of the damage, whether it stems from excessive heat styling, chemical treatments, or environmental aggressors. Once these culprits are identified, addressing them at their roots becomes imperative.”

“Begin by establishing a gentle cleansing routine using sulfate-free shampoos and hydrating conditioners. This helps prevent further stripping of the hair’s natural oils, fostering moisture retention and overall hair health,” she further added.

The expert also spoke about ‘hair cycling,’ which means alternating hair products to cater to changing hair needs. This can improve scalp health. You exfoliate your scalp once or twice a week to remove any buildup and you also do deep conditioning wherein you apply a hair mask on clean & damp hair and leave it on for 15-20 minutes for deep conditioning at home.

Using weekly deep conditioning treatments containing nourishing ingredients such as argan oil, coconut oil, and keratin protein can significantly improve the condition of damaged hair. These treatments penetrate deeply into the hair shaft, replenishing lost moisture and strengthening the hair from within. Additionally, using silk pillowcases to reduce friction and drying the hair with cotton towels can also help maintain hair health.

Supriya Punyani, Head R&D, Hair South Asia, Dove, says, “A hair mask works at a deeper level. With every wash and continuous exposure to UV, humidity etc., hair becomes weaker and stiffer due to loss of hair protein.”

Also one should minimise the use of heat styling tools and consistently apply heat protectant sprays before styling to mitigate further damage. Moreover, opt for protective hairstyles and steer clear of tight hair ties to minimize mechanical stress on the hair, thereby reducing breakage and split ends.
