Learn How To Protect Your Vision From Myopia With These Easy Tips

Billions of people around the globe suffer from myopia or short-sightedness. For those suffering from the condition, it becomes difficult for them to focus on faraway objects. It is a common vision problem that often requires glasses or lenses to improve sight. By 2050, more than half of the global population is expected to suffer from myopia as per a study conducted in 2021 and reported by India Today. This condition can lead to serious eye issues, making it crucial to take preventive measures. Though there is no specific cure for the condition, simple protective methods can help safeguard your eyesight.

According to Dr Savitha Arun, senior consultant at Nethradhama Super Speciality Eye Hospital, Bengaluru, “Natural light is crucial for healthy eye development, particularly in children. Exposure to natural light regulates the release of dopamine in the retina, which helps control eye growth and prevents myopia. That is why encouraging outdoor activities, especially during daylight hours, is vital for promoting healthy eye development.”

In this article, let’s explore some of the preventive measures that can make a big difference in preserving your eye health for the future.

  1. Protect Your Eyes from the SunThe exposure of the Sun can harm your eyes. Wearing good sunglasses will be beneficial to block harmful UV light and it will reduce the risk of myopia. Polarized glasses are the best for protection.
  2. Take Breaks from ScreensContinuous screen time can cause dry eyes, blurry vision, headaches and even eye strain. Experts recommend that every 20 minutes, an individual should look at something at least 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
  3. Give Your Eyes a Rest from BooksJust like screens, reading books very closely for a long period can lead to myopia. Follow the 20-minute rule and if you’re too busy, set an alarm to remind yourself.
  4. Get OutsideYoungsters and grownups should spend time outdoors to reduce the risk of developing short-sightedness. Children who spend time outside are less likely to develop the condition, while adults can spend time at the park or take a walk, which could be beneficial for eye health.
  5. Avoid Rubbing Your EyesDry eyes may make you want to rub them, but it can lead to reduced or blurry vision. On the other hand, bacteria on your hands can further cause the damage. Instead, use eye drops to clean your eyes.
