Jadau jewellery represents India’s rich cultural legacy. These designs are a symbol of elegance among India’s regal heritage. Jadau is a famous kind of jewellery that originated in Rajasthan and Bikaner, India. These designs entail placing precious and semi-precious gemstones into gold metal. Jadau jewellery is an inheritance that any Indian woman often passed down from generation to generation. Owing to Bollywood films and celebrities endorsing these timeless pieces, the craze for Jadau has reignited in the current decade. While most jewellery houses are making these refined pieces, it is crucial to understand what they are before you invest.

In an interview with Vogue, Rohan Narang, the managing director, Hazoorilal Legacy, an age-old jewellery house based in Delhi, explained the intricacies of buying Jadau pieces. He shared that the Mughals introduced jadau work to India, but it was further articulated by experienced craftsmen in Rajasthan, which is now regarded the hub of jadau jewels. He explained Jadau gets its name from the colloquial term ‘jad’ which means to embed and it is often employed in kundan, polki, and meenakari jewellery work.

On being asked the duration a craftsman would need to make an exquisite Jadau piece, Rohan Narang told Vogue that it depends on the intricacies of the design. He stated, “It’s a tedious process requiring utmost care and finesse. So while a smaller piece can be finished in a couple of days, an elaborate piece can actually take up to a few months to be ready.”

Buying a Jadau piece is definitely expensive, and one needs to be sure of its authenticity before investing. The managing director shared that checking the purity of the gold being used is important. He explained, “The jadau workmanship is usually done in 22-24k gold. The casing in which the stones are embedded should not be less than 22k gold.” Another crucial consideration is whether the stones have been processed or natural. One should also be aware of the numerous treatments used to improve the appearance of uncut diamonds and other precious stones.

Lastly, Rohan Narang also shared tips on how to take care of this precious jewellery. To avoid exposure to moisture and other impurities, keep the pieces securely wrapped in a cushioned canvas box or an airtight container. It should be the last item you wear when getting ready, as perfumes and hairsprays can erode the precious stones.
