Apple’s 2024 Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), which usually begins with a keynote address in early June is just around the corner. While WWDC predominantly caters to developers, the spotlight usually falls on iOS updates rather than new hardware.

The upcoming iOS 18 is poised to be one of the most significant iPhone software upgrades in recent time.

Apple CEO Tim Cook recently hinted at key Generation AI announcements for later this year.

According to his statements, WWDC is likely to be the event where all the activity will take place.

The iOS 16 and iOS 17 releases from Apple were merely cosmetic upgrades. The primary goal of these two iPhone software versions was to stabilise the operating system by making the most of the already existing key functionalities. It’s expected that the impending iOS 18 will be very different, offering several new features that benefit iPhone users in addition to UI-level improvements.

The development of iOS 18, which has been internally dubbed “Crystal,” is reportedly underway, according to a report in Bloomberg.

As per reports, most likely in September, the next-generation iPhone 16 series will make its debut alongside the stable version of iOS 18.

At its yearly developers conference, which is expected to happen in June, Apple will offer us a sneak peek at the same in addition to the upcoming operating system for the Apple Watch, Mac, Apple TV, and other devices.

It’s anticipated that the first public beta of iOS 18 will be released in July or August, with the developer beta coming out in June.

These builds are primarily intended for app developers and enthusiasts who want to be the first to test the new improvements, but they won’t be flawless by any means.

It is claimed that VisionOS served as an inspiration for iOS 18. If verified, the update is expected to bring more personalisation options in addition to components like circular icons and a transparent user interface that melds in perfectly with the entire operating system.

We may also eventually see a redesigned control centre. Even though iOS 1 introduced square-shaped icons, it will be interesting to watch whether the business decides to go to circular icons to better align with the design philosophy of VisionOS.
