Apple Cuts Down Vision Pro Shipment In 2024, Future Of Headset Lineup In Doubt?

Apple Vision Pro headset sales started a while back and the reviews have told us everything around its hype. But now the company faces the awkward decision of cutting down its shipments for 2024 as the demand for the headset seems to have gone down much earlier than it expected.

The details come via analyst Ming-Chi Kuo this week, who talked about Apple’s initial shipment target of around 800,000 units of the Vision Pro headset. However, the analyst now claims that Apple is expecting that estimate to drop by almost half to 400,000 units which is a big shipment correction.

The first-gen Apple headset costs $3,499 which makes it a hard-sell for the consumers and that has pushed the company to rejig its future roadmap for the segment, and is already in two minds about launching the affordable mixed reality headset which is rumoured to come in 2025 but could be pushed for later.

It is not surprising that the costly product has split opinions, especially when a first-gen product serves to show the promise in a segment which needed a boost.

Meta is equally hoping for Apple to pull off its magic once again, which could work in its favour as it looks to expand the Quest ecosystem by partnering with other brands like Microsoft does with Windows for PCs. It has licensed the Horizon OS to companies like Asus and Lenovo who will now be entrusted with expanding the reach of XR headset to other markets.

Kuo has usually kept a positive outlook on the new device but Apple’s insistence on packing the best hardware, including the camera sensors and the components like OLED display means its price barrier will always become a hindrance for people to consider spending their hard-earn money on in the future.
