Major Google Chrome Security Warning From Indian Govt: Here’s What You Should Know

Google Chrome continues to face new security threats and now a major warning alert has been issued by the Indian government this month. The latest Chrome security warning dated May 22, comes via the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) with a high severity ranking, which ought to get millions of Chrome users in the country extremely concerned.

What Does CERT-In Security Warning Say

Multiple vulnerabilities have been reported in Chrome which could allow a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code on the targeted system.” the security bulletin highlighted. As mentioned by CERT-In, these vulnerabilities exist in Chrome in the following components:

Heap buffer overflow in Angle and Dawn – This happens when a program attempts to write more data in a particular part of the memory that was supposed to.

Use after free in Scheduling – This is linked to incorrect use of dynamic memory in Chrome

Type confusion in V8 – Another major part of the browser when accessing using an incompatible type of file.

In simple words, if the attacker manages to bypass the security of the system and exploit these issues, they can get the victim to visit a targeted malicious website which can be very dangerous. So, if you have been using Chrome on either Windows, macOS or a Linux machine, you need to make sure these versions of the browser are not running on your system:

– Google Chrome versions prior to 125.0.6422.76/.77 for Windows and Mac

– Google Chrome versions prior to 125.0.6422.76 for Linux

Chrome Security Warning: What Should Users Do

To be safe, users must download the latest available software update for Google Chrome on Windows, macOS and Linux. You can do this by heading over to the three-dot menu on Chrome – Settings – About – Update Chrome. Google has listed the security fixes that come with the stable channel update.
