A thick chain necklace probably saved its owner’s life by blocking a bullet fired at his neck. The thick chain necklace worn by the man ensured that he survived the shooting Tuesday night in Commerce City, a suburb north of Denver. The city lies almost 11 kms away from the Colorado capital.
Police of Commerce City called the incident “just incredible”. They said that the braided metal necklace was the only thing between the man and his death when he was shot following an argument with another man last week.
The shooter was arrested on attempted homicide charges, according to police. He was scheduled to make a court appearance on Monday, according to court records.
The roughly half-inch chain worn around the man’s neck managed to stop a .22 calibre bullet in its tracks. The victim, whose identity was not released, suffered only a minor puncture wound.
“We’d say he really dodged a bullet– but in reality, he LODGED a bullet. (The necklace) is likely the only reason the victim of a shooting we responded to yesterday is still alive,” the police department said in a Facebook post.
Police were unsure what the necklace was made of but doubted it was silver, a soft metal unlikely to withstand a bullet, the statement said.
“Maybe think twice before you knock a knock-off,” the department quipped in its social media post.
The incident was reminiscent of an incident from 2021 in Argentina’s Buenos Aires when a boy’s crucifix necklace saved him from a stray bullet that could have hit his heart. Nine-year-old Tiziano was at home celebrating the New Year with his family in Tucuman, Argentina, when he felt a sharp pain in his chest and saw a bullet casing fall at his feet.
Apart from a nasty shock, he escaped the terrifying ordeal with only minor injuries.
